How Thailand’s adult nightlife actually works

A first-night walk-through from the team behind nongfan: how the bar script works, why those rooms are fun, and how a sideline meeting compares.

Written by the nongfan team

Who we are We used the other directories ourselves. We built nongfan around sideline girls — part-time meetings beside a normal week — because more profiles on those other sites simply meant more inventory.

Adults only. Licensed entertainment venues in Thailand are generally for customers 20 and over. If someone looks under 18, you leave.

The first time I walked into a go-go bar in Bangkok, I did what most first-timers do: I sat down too fast, ordered something I barely wanted, and then panicked because the woman I had been watching simply was not there anymore. I thought I had missed my chance. I thought I had broken some unspoken rule. I had done neither. She had rotated off the stage, which is what the numbers on the dancers are for, and which nobody had bothered to tell me in plain language.

We hear some version of that story from almost everyone who writes to us. The room looks chaotic. The words sound like code. Bar fine, lady drink, short time, long time, mamasan, joiner, off. It feels like everyone else got a briefing you did not.

They did not, not really. We did not either, the first dozen nights we spent in these places as customers ourselves, long before we built nongfan. What we eventually learned is almost disappointingly simple: the night is a script. Different rooms use different sets, but the scenes are the same. Once you can see them, the neon stops being mysterious and starts being readable.

One more thing, because it is why this site exists. nongfan is built around sideline girls: adult women, 18 or over, who offer paid meetings as a side job, next to university or an ordinary job. People call it hobby work or part-time work. That is what you browse here. The bar script below is still worth knowing. It is a good night out, and you will walk into it, so we explain it properly, and then we show how the same night looks as a sideline meeting.

The night is a script. Once you can see the scenes, it stops feeling mysterious.

What you are actually walking into

Thailand’s adult nightlife is not one scene. It is a set of businesses that sell company, drinks, and, in many rooms, the chance to leave together if both people agree. The company is the product you can see. Everything after that is a separate conversation between two adults.

That sounds colder than the room feels. The room is warm on purpose. Someone laughs at your jokes. Someone asks where you are from and how long you are staying. Someone puts a hand on your arm and the night suddenly has a plot. None of that makes the till any less real.

The sooner you can hold both ideas at once, that this is pleasant and that this is work, the less often you will feel tricked, and the less often you will treat someone badly because your expectations ran ahead of the arrangement. We wish someone had said that to us before we spent our first evening trying to decode smiles as if they were contracts.

Five formats: four rooms and streets, plus the one this site lists

Most first-trip confusion is a format mix-up. People walk into a sit-down hostess room expecting a stage, or treat a beer-bar chat as a signed deal. Here are the five, each on its own terms.

Sit-in / lady bar

A seated room, often with a live band, food, and hostesses who join your table. Thais often call this a chill bar. You pay for your drinks and for hers. In many of Bangkok’s big suburban rooms the hostesses are there to sit and talk, and there is no bar fine because they are not there to leave with you. In other cities the same format can include one. What is good about it: real conversation, a band, food, and a polite “I am just having a drink” actually works.

Beer bar

An open-air counter, stools, a pool table, football on a TV, and women who pour, sit and talk. No stage, no cover, usually the cheapest bar fine in the country when there is one. It is often the friendliest, cheapest start to a night, and a perfectly good place to end it if a cold drink and a chat was all you wanted.

Go-go bar

A stage, dancers in rotation, numbers on outfits or badges, seats around the show. Entry is almost always free. You watch, you drink, you can buy a lady drink so someone sits with you, and if you both want to leave you pay the bar a release fee, the bar fine, and then talk with her about everything else. Bangkok: Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy, Patpong. Pattaya: Walking Street and LK Metro. Phuket: around Bangla Road. What is good about it: it is a real show, you can walk in with no chat history, and the script is clear.

Freelancer — the street

When we say freelancer, we always mean adult women working a known street or stroll: not a bar, and not a listing. No house, no bar fine, no mamasan. The conversation starts right there and the agreement is between the two of you. What is good about it: it is direct. No chat, no waiting for a reply, no house in the middle.

Sideline — our mark

Not a fifth kind of stage. A sideline girl is an adult woman who offers paid meetings beside university or ordinary work: she has a Tuesday morning that is not a shift. You do not pick her from a podium or pay a house to release her. You find a profile, which is what nongfan lists, check that the person is real, and agree time, place and money directly. No lady drink and no bar fine, because there is no till. We call her sideline, never freelancer, even though she also works independently.

There are cousins of the bar rooms: KTV, massage, soapy, members’ clubs. They have their own bills. You do not need them on night one.

Sideline, compared

Why we built a site around that fifth card, without taking anything away from the other four: she has another life beside this work, so the meeting sits next to her week rather than inside a shift. There is no house between you, no lady-drink ladder, no bar fine, no number on a badge. The conversation can feel closer to two people than to a customer and a shift. And you choose from listings instead of whoever happens to be on rotation that hour.

The honest flip side: there is no mamasan to translate the rules, a photo is not a person, you have to write first and wait, and her calendar is a real calendar. We are convinced the trade is worth it. Lady bars, go-gos, beer bars and the street are still good nights.

You walk in. There is almost never a cover charge. Someone waves you toward a seat. In a go-go, take one with a view of the stage but not so close that you cannot see the room. Order your own drink and actually look around for ten minutes. This is the part first-timers skip, and it is the part that saves you money.

In a go-go, the lineup works in sets. One group is on stage, another is changing, sitting with customers, or on a break. The woman who was in front of you can disappear after a few songs. She has not rejected you and she has not left the building. She has rotated off. That is why she wears a number. The night I thought I had lost someone, I could have simply told the waitress “number 22.” The mamasan, the woman who runs the floor, would have found her.

If you want company at the table, you buy a lady drink. That drink is how she is allowed to sit with you, and how she earns a commission. It is not a down payment on the rest of the night. If the conversation is easy, you can talk about whether either of you wants to leave together, for how long, and for what money. If it is not easy, you finish the drink and you do not keep stacking glasses out of politeness or panic.

If you both want to leave, you pay the bar fine to the bar. Then you pay her what you agreed with her, usually later, and you go to a short-time hotel or back to a room that will actually let a visitor in. Those are separate payments. Mixing them up is the most expensive sentence in this entire guide.

You can also do none of that. You can watch one rotation, finish your beer, and walk to the next place. Nobody sensible will be offended. That freedom is part of what makes a bar night fun.

The same night as a sideline meeting has no door, no number and no rotation. The script shrinks to: write first, confirm she is the person on the page, agree the clock and the number, meet somewhere that will take an ID. What you lose is the walk-in: you cannot watch first. What you gain, in our view, is a meeting between two people instead of a slot in a shift. The risk moves: nobody at a till is checking the listing against a face. That is why Trust Level exists.

The lady drink

A lady drink is a drink you buy for someone who works in the bar so she can sit with you. It costs more than the liquid is worth because part of the price is her wage. The glass is often a small cola, juice, a weak mixer, a beer, or a shot. You are not buying a cocktail. You are buying a slice of her time on the clock.

Typical prices published in 2026 guides sit roughly around ฿100–250 in beer bars and lady bars, and around ฿160–290 in go-gos, depending on the city and the room. Treat those as a band, not a quote.

What you actually bought

Illustration · nongfan Typical range, not a quote.

One drink when she sitsAnother about every 30–40 min

Typical Bangkok lady-bar rhythm from public guides. Not a rule.

A lady drink is also optional in more rooms than the internet pretends. A friendly “not right now” is normal. If a bar requires two or three before anyone can leave, they should say so before you are already deep in the tab. Ask.

One more first-night surprise, because it happened to us and it shows up in the guides constantly: some dancers in some rooms are there to dance and drink, not to leave. People call them coyotes. They will be charming. Confirm early. It is an awkward twenty seconds, and it is cheaper than an awkward midnight.

Sideline comparison: there is no lady drink on a sideline meeting, because you are not in her workplace and nobody earns commission on a glass. The lady drink is a fair, fun way to buy company in a room. We simply like that a sideline meeting has no ladder to climb. If a chat asks you to buy a drink or send money before you have met, that is not how sideline on this site works.

The bar fine is not her fee

Say it with us. The bar fine is a fee you pay the bar so a staff member can leave her shift. It covers the drinks and time the house will lose. It goes to the till. It does not go into her bag, and it does not buy a private agreement.

Paying the bar fine does not pay her.

Money to the bar

The bar fine. Fixed by the house. Paid at the till.

Money to her

Her fee. Agreed with her. Short time and long time live in this conversation, not on the chalkboard.

Illustration · nongfan Typical range, not a quote.

Typical bar-fine bands from public 2026 write-ups: roughly ฿300–1,200 in many beer bars, often at the low end outside the tourist islands, roughly ฿600–1,500 in Bangkok go-gos, and higher on Pattaya’s Walking Street, where figures over ฿2,000 show up in the same guides.

Soi 6 in Pattaya runs its own clock. A room upstairs is one payment, taking someone off-site is another, and both get confused with a bar fine in casual speech. If you go there, ask which of the two they mean.

Agree the numbers while you are still in the bar. Agree time and place. Then pay the bar, then go. A lot of people recommend not handing over her full fee before anything happens. Others pay in stages. Whatever you do, do not invent a third version in your head and assume she has it too.

Sideline comparison: no house, no fine. One agreed number, paid to her. If someone quotes a bar fine in a LINE chat before any meeting, the word is borrowed, or invented. We like that simplicity. The price of it is homework: you check the person before you meet, because nobody else did.

Short time, long time, and what you should say out loud

ST

LT

Guides describe the pattern. Your agreement is the one that counts. What you are agreeing is time, place, money, and what both of you are okay with. Say it in ordinary words. It is not unromantic. It is how you avoid the only fight that nobody enjoys.

If something important is unclear, language, a translation app, a lot of noise, slow down. The mamasan can sometimes help with logistics. The private part of the conversation is still yours and hers. Short-time hotels are usually easy: she will know the nearest one. Your own hotel is only easy if it is guest-friendly.

Sideline comparison: the same clocks. Short time and long time mean whatever you both said. The difference is the morning. Hers may be a lecture or a real shift, not another night on a stage. That double calendar is not a brush-off. It is the reason we built the directory around this format.

  • How long.
  • Where.
  • The number, and when it is paid.
  • What you are each okay with, and what you are not.

What a night actually costs

Think in layers, not in one mythical price.

  4. Her fee, if you both agreeagreed with her

  6. A tipoptional

Typical range, not a quote. ฿ throughout.

Public 2026 guides put a straightforward Bangkok or Pattaya go-go short-time night, all in, somewhere around a few thousand baht once you add a couple of drinks, a lady drink or two, the fine, her fee and a room. Beer-bar nights can land lower. Long time runs higher. A lady-bar evening that never leaves the table can stay in the low thousands if you keep to one hostess and watch the round. None of this is a promise. The only honest number is the one you agreed in the room.

Everything paid to the bar tends to be fixed. Everything paid to her tends to be negotiated. Ask the house its number. Ask her hers. Do not let one person quote both as if they were the same pile of cash.

Sideline comparison: usually one line on the receipt, her fee, plus a hotel or joiner if you use one. Public guides often quote Bangkok meetings in the low thousands of baht. That is their band, not our price list. You skip the lady drinks and the fine. Spend the savings on being careful before anyone arrives.

Bring what the evening is allowed to cost, and leave the rest in the safe. We learned that the boring way: a fat wallet at 1 a.m. makes everyone in the conversation a little worse, including us.

Where a beginner should actually go

Four places account for almost every first-night question we get. The mechanics travel with you. The mood does not.

Chiang MaiBangkokPattayaPhuket

Bangkok

Three go-go neighborhoods within a short ride of each other. Nana Plaza is the enclosed three-floor hit of neon, easy to bar-hop and easy to overstimulate on night one. Soi Cowboy is a short open strip, often the gentler first go-go street. Patpong is the oldest, mixed with a night market and touts. The sit-in lady bars that locals actually use are often in Huai Khwang, Ratchada and the north-eastern suburbs: big rooms, live bands, conversation for a lady drink, and often no bar fine.

Pattaya

Walking Street is the postcard: bigger, louder, usually more expensive. LK Metro and Soi Buakhao are the inland alternative a lot of people prefer once the novelty wears off. Soi 6 is its own planet: short-time bars, rooms upstairs, daylight trade, a price system that changes with the hour. Ask which payment they mean.

Phuket

Bangla Road in Patong is the party version: beach-town energy, beer bars in the side sois, a smaller go-go cluster than Bangkok or Pattaya. The mechanics are the same. Drink, lady drink, bar fine, private agreement.

Chiang Mai

There is no go-go scene to speak of. Loi Kroh Road is the bar street: lady bars and beer bars, a slower tempo, often lower numbers. For a lot of people it is the kinder first night in the country.

Many go-gos do not feel like themselves until after 9 p.m. Happy hour, where it exists, is for your beer, not for a decision you have not made yet.

How not to be that guy

Be decent. It is not a strategy. It is the minimum.

  • Do not photograph the stage, and do not put a camera in anyone’s face.
  • Read the bill. Handwritten tabs pick up extra lady drinks the way pockets pick up sand.
  • One clear no is enough. You do not owe a speech, and you do not owe a second drink to make the first one feel polite.
  • Do not get so drunk that you cannot hear what was agreed.
  • If someone is not interested, that is the end of it. There are other rooms and other nights.
  • Do not go looking for a love story in a place that sells the feeling of one.

We have watched evenings go cold in a second because someone thought a story for the group chat mattered more than the person in it.

Some people will tell you about a sick relative, a buffer that needs surgery, a plan to leave this life if only someone would help. We are not saying every hard story is false. We are saying the room is very good at making a customer feel chosen. Enjoy the evening you actually agreed to.

When the night goes sideways

Most bad first nights are not cinematic. They are a padded bill, a tout steering you into a show with an ugly receipt, a second and third hostess you smiled at too vaguely, or a listing online whose photos belonged to someone else.

  • A padded bill. Point at the line and wait.
  • Extra hostesses you did not ask to sit.
  • A stranger with a special show two alleys away.
  • A coyote: charming company that does not leave with you.
  • A listing whose photos are not the person in front of you.

The last one is personal for us. We used the other directories the way everyone does. We watched the same pictures recycled under new names, and we watched platforms leave those pages up because a page is inventory. More profiles meant more advertisements, whether or not anyone had checked whether the person was real. Nobody was paid to warn us. That is why nongfan exists, and why Trust Level cannot be bought. We compare what public listings actually say, and when we have dealt with an agency ourselves, we say so in public.

On the street, skip the stranger who has a special show unless you already know the room. Call a Grab from inside the building at the end of the night instead of taking the first tuk-tuk that found you. If a number on the bill is wrong, point at it calmly and wait.

If someone looks too young, there is no clever version of staying. Leave.

This is why we compare public listings. How Trust Level is calculated

Your hotel has a vote

A guest-friendly hotel will let a visitor come up, usually after an ID check at reception. Some hotels do that for free. Some charge a joiner fee. Some, often the polished international brands, will not let a visitor up at all, and no amount of explaining at 2 a.m. will turn them into a different hotel.

Check this when you book, not in the lobby with someone standing beside you. Short-time hotels exist so you do not have to solve this problem if your room is the fussy kind. Front desks that ask for ID are recording who is in the building. Have that expectation already, and the moment stays ordinary.

Guest-friendly

A visitor can come up, usually after an ID check. Sometimes free.

Joiner fee

The desk allows a visitor and charges for it.

No visitors

Often the big international brands. A speech at 2 a.m. will not change the rule.

The law, in the few words that matter here

We are not lawyers, and this is not advice.

Licensed entertainment places in Thailand are generally not supposed to admit customers under 20, and venues can be in serious trouble if they do. If you are 19, a bartender waving you in does not rewrite that.

Anything sexual involving anyone under 18 is a serious crime. Consent does not create an exception. A story about a fake ID does not create one either. If you have any doubt about someone’s age, you leave. That is the whole policy.

People online will tell you prostitution in Thailand is technically illegal but openly tolerated, or the opposite, depending on which article they skimmed. The statutes that actually get discussed, including the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act and the Entertainment Places Act, are aimed more at the business, procuring, underage offences and how venues are run than at a simple slogan. Enforcement and ministerial rules also change. If you need the legal picture, read a lawyer’s summary, not a bar stool. Thai Law Online, plain-language reading

Not legal advice. Laws and enforcement change. A messy disagreement about money in a hotel room is not something you will enforce. Behave like someone who knows that.

How we use all of this on nongfan

We built a directory because the listings were already out there, scattered, copied, and rarely compared, and because what we wanted to browse were sideline girls. We like a good bar night. We simply became convinced that a meeting with a woman who has another life beside this work is the better fit for us. We built Trust Level because we were tired of being the last people to notice that two pages with the same photos told different stories.

On nongfan, read a profile the way you read the bar script: does the story hold together across platforms? Trust Level compares public facts and cannot be bought. Search higher-trust sideline profiles first, write before you meet, agree time, place and money, and keep the night human.

If you only wanted to understand the night before you go out, that is still a good reason to have opened this page.

FAQ

Do I have to buy a lady drink?

Usually no. It is how you ask someone who works there to sit with you. You can drink your own beer and watch the room. If a particular bar has a house minimum before anyone can leave, ask before you start a tab.

Does a lady drink mean she will leave with me?

No. It means she can sit with you for a bit and she earns from that drink. Leaving is a separate yes from her, plus the bar fine if the house charges one, plus her own fee if you both agree to one.

What is a bar fine?

Money to the bar so she can leave her shift. Not her fee. Not the hotel. Not the taxi.

What do ST and LT mean?

Short time and long time. A shorter meeting, often a couple of hours, versus overnight. Agree the clock and the number before you stand up.

Can I just watch?

Yes. Finish your drink. Leave a tip for the waitress if you want to. Go somewhere else.

Is it okay to say no?

Yes. Say it once, clearly, without a speech. The professional response is that she moves on.

Why do your listings exist at all?

Because the public directories already do, and because too many of them have no reason to tell you when a page is a copy. We compare what we can check. We do not sell the score.

What is a freelancer?

On nongfan, always an adult woman working a known street. No house, no bar fine. We never use the word for sideline girls.

Is a sideline meeting the same as taking someone out of a go-go?

No. A go-go takeout is a professional shift plus a house fee. A sideline meeting is part-time work arranged outside any venue. That is what this site lists. The clocks look similar. The till does not.

Is nongfan an OnlyFans directory?

No. We do not list OnlyFans or subscription pages. We list adult sideline girls who offer meetings.
